Caring for your Crazylegs Sourdough Loaf
You just got a loaf dropped off at your door step - or you picked one up. Now what?
Your loaf does not include preservatives, which means the shelf life is not like the bread you find at the store. We recommend enjoying your loaf within 4 days, and slicing as needed. If you need extra time to consume your loaf - here are some recommendation to enjoy past those 4 days:
Storing on the Counter: You can keep in the original packaging - works great! Or wrapped in a tea towel as well. You do want some air to be introduced to the loaf rather than trapping the loaf in a sealed container or sealed ziplock bag (which would create a cozy space for mold to grow). Check below for tips on giving life back to your loaf if it got hard (like steaming up in the microwave!
Slicing & Freezing: This is my go to method for easy lunch and breakfasts all week and I don’t have to worry. I grab my fresh loaf, slice the full loaf to preferred thickness and place in a gallon size freezer or storage bag (off setting each slice just a bit so its easy to pick apart later) and toss in the freezer. When I am ready to consume I simply take out a slice as needed about 30 minutes prior to eating and let it naturally defrost on the counter (or reheat in the microwave if I am in a hurry)
Reheating: This loaf loaves steam! I will place a damp paper towel on my slice and place in the microwave for a minute or so. If my loaf isn’t sliced, and I am going to use the rest of my loaf I will pour some water on the loaf and place in the oven at Bake - 350F directly on the oven racks to reheat and rehydrate!
Dried Out Loaf: Makes great croutons (check out that recipe in the blog) or you can work on rehydrating your loaf with the oven method below.
